How to Buy a Piano
Cathy took a look behind the sliding door which is heading to the huge veranda of the house. She saw her parents talking while having a light breakfast. Without making a sound, she slowly walked towards them. Her Mom noticed her presence that stopped her from walking.
“With that look of your daughter Tim, I know it is not a good news,” her mother said while looking at her Dad. She knew her since immemorial especially when she's asking something for one of her whims.
“Mom, you're exaggerating! I only asked small things from you,” she said, rolling her eyes ceiling ward. For all she knew, they would still stretch their budget for her. Why, she is an only daughter!
“Don't mind you mom Pet. What do you want for your birthday?” He asked softly. Tim Crawford was the sweeest Dad in the world. She went to him and sat on his lap which turned to be her habit every time they talk.
“Daddy, I want a Steinway piano for my birthday,” she said in a tender voice. Cathy heard her mom gasped for a while, without saying a single word. Her Dad searched for her eyes to see if she was really serious. Sometimes, she would request something only to spite her friends. “I'm serious Dad, I want to own a Steinway!”
He turned to her Mom, supressing to laugh at the funny expression of the latter. She looked like she has lost a million. “Well Mommy, how can we refuse to these pleading eyes?” He said, grinning. She smiled in satisfaction when she heard her mom sighed in resignation.
“You really spoiled your daughter Tim. She's too young for whims and caprices but I guess you need to talk to your friend George. He's selling the finest Steinway pianos in Detroit right?”
“Yes, I have to talk to him. His rebuilt Steinway pianos are much better than the new ones and they only cost half the price of the new ones.” He said while looking at her.
“Wow, that sounds great Dad! It's a great deal!” She gave them a kiss on their cheeks before leaving for school. She'll be turning 16 next month and she can't wait to finally own a Steinway. She and her friends would often talk about pianos. When she was still in grade school, her parents had enrolled her in a piano class but for over a year, she stopped. She became busy with her studies and now, she wanted to play the piano again.
The following week, her Dad brought her to the Forte Piano company in Detroit. The owner was his friend George. Right after they entered the store, she was amazed of the array of pianos inside. The photos didn't do them justice. They looked so good in person. Excitedly, she would press each keys and grasp each sound emitting from the instrument. She giggled when the sound coming the Steinway satisfied her. The sound of Steinway was superbly exceptional.
George and her father were staring at her in fascination while talking about the piano dealership whenever they would purchase one. She also knew he was an owner of a piano store but little did she know they are Steinway!
“Dad, I have found my piano. Come here, I want you to listen while I'm playing your favorite song of Mom,” she said sweetly. The two men went closer and she started playing. As her hands expertly playing with the keys, the melody of the song brought a nostalgic feeling to her senses – way back to her childhood.
“You have one sweet daughter Tim. It is sweet of her to play that memorable song of you and Eliza. I felt young too in those olden days,” George chuckled. Her Dad nodded and she knew he was enchanted by the melody and beautiful sound coming from the instrument.
She was satisfied after playing the song. “What do you think Dad?” With a glint of gladness in eyes, she reached for his father's arm and faced George.
“Okay George, we'll get this one.” They talked about the dealership and the course of the deliver once the check was received. Cathy couldn't help herself smiling until they went the store. Finally, she will own a precious gem!
